B2B sales metrics every company should track
Every sales team tracks revenue. But revenue is a result metric — it shows what has already happened, not what's about to happen. To run a B2B sales operation intelligently, you need metrics that anticipate the result, not just record it.
This guide covers the essential B2B sales metrics — organized by category — and how to use them to make better decisions.
Top-of-funnel metrics (demand generation)
Volume of qualified leads generated How many prospects who match the ICP enter the funnel per period. Unqualified leads inflate the number and distort the analysis.
Lead-to-opportunity conversion rate Of all the leads that enter the top of the funnel, what percentage moves on to the discovery or meeting stage? A low rate points to a qualification problem or a poorly defined ICP.
Cost per qualified lead How much it costs, in SDR time and marketing investment, to generate each lead that passes initial qualification.
Mid-funnel metrics (conversion)
Conversion rate by stage The most important funnel metric: from qualification to discovery, from discovery to proposal, from proposal to negotiation, from negotiation to close. Each stage with its own rate lets you identify exactly where the funnel leaks.
Average sales cycle How many days, on average, it takes from the first qualified contact to the close. Breaking it down by segment, customer size and product/service reveals important patterns.
Number of active proposals How many proposals are open right now. Combined with the historical conversion rate, it lets you project expected revenue for the coming weeks.

Result metrics
New revenue Revenue generated by new customers in the period. Kept separate from expansion revenue for clarity on the health of acquisition.
Average deal size The average value of closed contracts. Tracking the trend in average deal size over time shows whether the company is selling to more or less qualified customers.
Win Rate The percentage of opportunities that close versus the total number of opportunities that reached the proposal stage. One of the most revealing metrics of the closing team's efficiency.
Loss rate by reason It's not enough to know you lost — you need to know why. Lost on price, on lack of fit, on timing. Each reason points to a different diagnosis.
Activity metrics (leading indicators)
Discovery meetings held per sales rep The most predictive activity for results in B2B. A sales rep who doesn't run discovery doesn't close.
Proposals sent per period Combined with the win rate, it projects future results.
Follow-ups done vs. open opportunities The percentage of opportunities receiving active contact. Opportunities without follow-up are revenue that's quietly dying.
Pipeline quality metrics
Average age of opportunities by stage Opportunities that have sat too long in a stage indicate stagnation — or leads that should be discarded but are inflating the pipeline.
Pipeline coverage The ratio between the volume of open opportunities and the target for the period. Low coverage signals a problem hitting the target ahead of time.
How to use the metrics in practice
Metrics only have value when they lead to action. The right cycle:
- Measure consistently — same definitions, same frequency;
- Analyze trends — not just one-off snapshots;
- Identify the most critical metric right now;
- Make an action decision based on it;
- Monitor the impact of the action.
Sales conversation analysis complements these quantitative metrics with qualitative analysis — identifying what the best sales reps do differently at the moments the metrics flag as critical.
