The problem RevOps solves
Marketing is measured on lead volume, sales on closed deals, post-sale on retention. Each team optimizes its own metric and the whole loses: marketing delivers low-quality volume because volume is what gets measured, and sales discards leads without sending any information back because there's no channel for it.
RevOps exists to treat revenue as a single process, not as a relay race where nobody owns the baton that gets dropped.
What the function does in practice
In practice, the work is more operational than strategic:
- Defines and maintains the revenue tool stack
- Makes sure data flows between marketing, sales and post-sale
- Standardizes definitions — what counts as a qualified lead, what counts as an opportunity
- Builds the forecast and the operation's metrics
RevOps and revenue engineering
The principles are the same: align people, processes, data and technology around revenue. The difference is in context and scope.
RevOps is the vocabulary of tech companies, usually B2B SaaS with already specialized teams. Revenue engineering applies the same principles to operations that aren't SaaS — and includes building the software when no suitable tool exists, which RevOps usually doesn't cover.
